Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper, a name given to the murderer of five or six women in the East End of London in 1888, has remained a mystery and has also continued to fascinate and horrify many people till this day. Between August and November 1888 five or six women were murdered in the Whitechapel are of London. All the women were prostitutes and all, except for one (Elizabeth Stride), were horribly mutilated.

The first murder took place on 31 August where Mary Ann Nichols was murdered. Annie Chapman was killed on 8 September. Catherine Eddowes and Elizabeth Stride were murdered on the 30th of September and Mary Jane Kelly on the 9th of November. These five are known as the 'canonical five' Ripper murders. The sixth person thought by many to be a Ripper victim is Martha Tabram who was stabbed to death on 6 August 1888, making her the first victim.

There has been much speculation as to the identity of the killer. Many believe that he or she was a butcher or a doctor. This was based on the evidence of weapons and the mutilations that occurred, which showed an excellent knowledge of human anatomy. Many theories have been put forward but all had insubstantial evidence. One theory links the murders with Prince Albert Victor, Queen Victoria's grandson, who was also known as the Duke of Clarence.
At that time violence to prostitutes was not uncommon. Many women were being brutalised, but in the case of the ripper murders it is strongly suggested that they were committed by a single perpetrator.

Near the murder scene of Catherine Eddowes' murder, the words 'The Juwes are not the men to be blamed for nothing,' were found written on a wall and it was believed that it was the killer's words. A police officer ordered the words to be removed, fearing an anti-Semetic backlash due to the fact that the area had a large Jewish population. It is also thought that the murderer had contacted public figures via letters, but these and the writing on the wall have never been proved to be authentic.
Jack the Ripper was never caught and he is not thought to have killed again after November 1888.

How many calories do we burn just by using our brains

Generally our brain burns 20% of the total energy needed on a daily basis in order to function normally. This means that it requires 400-500 calories a day, which varies according to how hard-working someone is. When we are awake we use a major part of our brain in order to function, use our muscles and our senses.

Experiments have shown that this is also relative to ones IQ. According to how clever someone is he burns more calories. This is because a clever person has to use his brain more and harder to solve a difficult problem.
At least now when I am going to be reading I will have in mind that I'm burning calories...!

A boutique in the middle of nowhere

I can't say that I understand all the new trends and the commercial side of things but this belongs in the sphere of 'odd things'. A Prada boutique was built in the middle of a desert motorway in the Western part of Texas, USA. It was built for an artistic and commercial project in order to promote bags designed by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, who spent for the whole project 80.000 dollars.

I just have two questions...Who works there and who will buy these designer bags in the middle of a motorway in Texas???

A 22 year old has...61 children with 52 women

Iakovos Georgiou from Kalohori in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece, is a unique case, breaking a world record. He became a father for the first time when he was 18 and it seems he liked it so much that he became a father in total 61 times in four years with 52 women.

The media found out about this when the police arrested the 22 year old boy for not being able to pay child support. Many local residents asked for Iakovo's castration. The funny thing is that since this has been published by the local press many other women have called the police and claimed that the father of their child is in fact Iakovos.

6 yo Janelle now 3 months after Shilla Procedure for Early Onset Scoliosis (EOS) Doing Great

We just saw Janelle and her mom back for follow-up, now 3 months out from her anterior/posterior scoliosis short fusion with Shilla growing rod technique we did with Dr. Richard McCarthy at Arkansas Children's Hospital back in December. She has no pain, is eating well, and loves her new shape/posture.

She looks awesome and happy today, and has grown 3/4 of an inch since we saw her just six weeks ago! The Shilla technique allows her to keep growing, as the rods can slide through the pedicle screws at the top and bottom.

She will be going back to do some ballet now, and gave us a little demonstration here at Hey Clinic.
Janelle and her mom gave us permission to share this with all of you.

Many thanks again to Dr. McCarthy and his wonderful staff for allowing me to come out and learn this technique, and his wonderful care for Janelle and her family.

Take care Janelle! You look awesome.

A woman needs 1 million friends on facebook in order to get married.

Kelly Coxhead who is currently 32, got engaged 10 years ago and has tried since to get married to her fiancée, so she can book a date and let the family know.  However Paul Mappelthorpe, a mechanic who lives with Kelly in Swindon, outside London, has stated that he will only get married to Kelly if she can achieve to obtain 1 million friends on her facebook group page. This long process definitely gives Paul the title of the least romantic person in England.

If anyone wants to help Kelly to get married soon, the group on facebook is called :" I NEED 1 MILLION PEOPLE TO JOIN FOR PAUL TO MARRY ME C'MON GUYS HELP ME lol". I am actually now questioning if Paul is suitable for Kelly, since this will be a long task to achieve. Is someone you love worth this kind of torture?

Awesome artwork from one of our kyphosis Postop patients!

Thanks Annika!
Beautiful!!!

Huge surgery went well today. Scrubs Dan Remains Focused and Self Disciplined, only a week to Daytona Bike Week.

Just finished doing a very complex T5-Iliac wing reconstruction for a very pleasant 49 yo woman.  She had a non-instrumented scoliosis fusion as a child, and was left with a large thoracolumbar deformity. She then developed collapse at the levels below, and had an anterior / posterior reconstruction.  She did well quite a while, but then actually cracked her old fusion mass at thoracolumbar junction, and developed progressive kyphosis and increasing scoliosis with pain.

Today I revised this surgery with an osteotomy, and extension instrumentation and fusion.
She did very well.
No blood transfusions.  Evoked Motor and Sensory Function was normal.

It was quite complex, due to the old fusion mass which blurs your anatomic landmarks.

Scrub tech “Scrubs”, also known as “Motorcycle Dan” helped me today along with Scrub Sheila, and Nurse Kelly, Jenny and several others.

Scrubs Dan wanted everyone to know that he remained “focused and self-disciplined” throughout surgery, even though he is only one week away from his 9 day vacation at Daytona Bike Week!  He loads up his Harley on the trailer next Friday and heads south.

Dan thought we’d be working til 5pm, and was pleased when we finished up at 2pm, about 4.5 hours altogether.
