Rubbish in Mozambique

Growing up in a European capital where rubbish is put in the dustbin and from there the rubbish dumps, which I do not know and in a way I don't want to know where they are. People in the cities choose to distance themselves from these facts and get quite annoyed when the trash is not collected on time.

However we forget various other places around the world which receive our rubbish. It is a fact that trash is moved around, massive quantities are thrown in the oceans and the third world. These of course produce many illnesses and infections to the people close to this 'mountains of rubbish'.

Are the pictures here the answer to the problem in the 21st century? We have been hearing that a futuristic solution would be to send our rubbish into space. Maybe recycling should be taken more seriously. These images are appalling, showing how colonial attitudes from the Western powers towards the South, mainly Africa, continue even in the post-colonial era.

Fantasy Coffins from Ghana

Funerals are a time of mourning, but also of celebration, for the Ga tribe in the coastal region of Ghana. The Ga people believe that when their loved ones die they move on into another life, that is why they try to do it with style. They honour the dead with brightly coloured coffins with various shapes, according to the way they lived.

The coffins are designed in such a shape in order to represent an aspect of the deceased's life, for example a car for a driver, a fish for a fisherman, a plane for a pilot... They could also symbolize a vice, i.e. a bottle of bear, wine or cigarette. In Accra, the capital of Ghana, anyone can find many coffin vendors, making it a huge and expensive industry. A coffin, made in any shape imagined, can cost $400, which is a year's salary for the people in Ghana.

However this relatively new tradition of Fantasy coffins have become now a tourist attraction for not only Accra but also for the whole country.

Woman violently beaten in Sudan

I'm not going to comment much on this topic, as I acknowledge that weird and outdated laws still exist all over the world. However, maybe, feminist groups, human right groups, the UN or any other international body should intervene when things like the one shown in this video take place.
As explained from the title it is a video showing a violent beating of a woman in Sudan because she wore trousers, which goes against the country's controversial INDECENCY LAW.
This video contains violence not suitable for everyone.

Stone Forest in Madagascar

I found this topic very interesting..It is another example of how our world is diverse and it emphasises the fact that every region has its unique features. The Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict nature Reserve is located near the Western coast of Madagascar, Africa's biggest island. It was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 due to its unique and breathtaking geography.

This forest includes karstic landscapes and limestone uplands cut into impressive tsingy peaks and a 'forest' of limestone needles, the sectacular canyon of the Manambolo river, rolling hills and high peaks. The word tsingy is indigenous to the Malagasy language and means "where one cannot walk barefoot". As seen in the pictures this seems to be the case.

The undisturbed forests, lakes and mangrove swamps are the habitat for rare and endangered lemurs and birds.
